Thank you for bringing in such wonderful items for your Star Week and helping us celebrate with you! :D -The students insisted that we celebrate my half-birthday as well so they had to help me blow out all of the candles on the cake! :P What sweethearts! Thank you to the students who drew me pictures and gave me a gift! Vision Screening You should be hearing from the nurse, soon, if your child did not pass the vision screening. If you don't hear anything this week, assume that your child passed!

HWT We worked on our last digraph for the year, ch. The students are starting to distinguish between all three (sh, th, and ch) diagraphs now! Because 4K does it best, we embraced all of the energy that the students had and threw another party at them! :P Let me tell you... it got loud and messy but it was a whole lot of fun! We: -passed out Valentines throughout the morning -showed off our boxes -read Pete the Cat: Valentine's Day is Cool -rotated through centers (cookie decorating, Bee Mine craft, candy hearts, and sensory sorting -had a fire drill -danced to Valentine's Day songs -did our Sound Monster for letter D -read Arthur's Valentine -watched Mr. Monkey, Monkey Mechanic Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who donated supplies, volunteered in the classroom, and made Valentines/boxes at home with their children. We had a 100th Day of School celebration, even though the day was a little off (thank WI weather for that one). :P The kids were so excited to have finally completed the chain and do some activities throughout the day. We: -showed off our collections of 100 or talked about what we would like to count -sang and danced to some 100th day songs -signed a 100 Days Smarter worksheet -worked as a team to build with an assortment of 100 items -read Miss Bindergarten's 100th Day of Kindergarten -finished up some Valentine's Day crafts Here's to the last 71 days of school! Schauer Arts Center Thank you so much for allowing your children to come to the show! I also appreciate the chaperones who were in attendance and made this trip possible. Dr. Wow taught them a lot of scientific concepts in a pretty interesting manner. I saw a lot of smiling faces during the trip. :) Birthday Happy half-birthday to Evelyn and Norah! :D Thank you, girls, for letting us celebrate with you and bringing in delicious cupcakes! Bathroom So, Allenton finally figured out why 4K keeps having sewage issues. They'll have to tear apart sections of the parking lot and resolve the issue underground. The good news: 4K has been really understanding (even when we had to evacuate) and the problem will get fixed. The bad news: we cannot use our bathroom or any running water until (hopefully) we come back on February 19th. February 4th-8th:
HWT We practiced putting t and h together to make the /th/ sound. It's still quite tricky so future practice is needed! Projects -The Day it Rained Hearts (math, addition lesson) -Star Light, Star Bright nursery rhyme -Ten Black Dots (turning the dots into an object) Math -Numbers inside of 10 -Dispersing up to 10 objects into two groups (counting the individual groups and then adding them together) -Graphing numbers 1-10 -Counting in a circle (most students still need a lot of practice in this area)\ Reading -We used Rekenreks this week to help us read counting books. We kept track of what number we were on and practiced pulling different quantities from the "resting" section to the "working" sections with these books: One Big Building, Fish Eyes, and Mouse Count. My oh my what a strange week we had! In the two days of school we had, we tried to accomplish a lot! HWT We practiced putting s and h together to make sh. Meeting We've been trying to finish up our second Bear of Power: I am gentle, powerful, and free but we keep getting interrupted. :P We did do some animal dances and play pick up sticks, which required them to be the most gentle I've ever seen! Projects -Groundhog Shadow Matching -Groundhog Heart Craft -Groundhog Syllables -Groundhog Puppet -Writing letters that we've learned thus far Guidance The students sorted words into buckets depending on what each word's beginning sound was. HWT We focused on the letter S this week and did our usual letter practice activities. Meeting We re-visited the Dolphin of Peace and learned "I ask for what I want and need." This was a very important concept for our class so they can start voicing their thoughts or resolving situations without making noise, crying, screaming, or tattling. Here's how we practiced this theme: -Monkey Madness: monkeys handling a situation poorly and students stepping in to fix it -Restaurant Requests: students assuming different roles and asking for food and carrying out orders -Sharing Toys: working at different centers and taking turns with toys Projects -S craft -There Was a Little Turtle nursery rhyme -Sensory bag texture guessing -Taste testing sweet, sour, salty, and bitter foods -Making a telescope to alter the color of objects -Listening to a video and determining which object made that sound -Smelling extracts on cotton balls and guessing what scent it was Guidance -Learning about acceptance and how to embrace differences -Putting together and breaking apart compound words Math -Matching two items together to make pairs -Counting objects by lining them up and drawing tally marks -Matching a numeral with the appropriate number of objects -Writing numerals up to 8 (OR MORE) -Counting backwards and by 2s Reading -Beginning sounds -Syllables -Letters vs. words -Tracking print -Describing pictures and making predictions January 7th-11th:
HWT We learned about the letter G and did all of our regular practices. They were interested to find out that G makes two sounds, one of which is the sound J makes! Meeting We finished up the Hummingbird of Love: I am kind by reading a book and playing a Hand Sandwich games where children had to take turns pulling their hands out from the bottom and placing them back on the top. Projects -G craft -Owl Tearing Project -Seal and Walrus Craft -Penguin roll and stamp numbers -Blubber lesson (feeling the difference in water) -January name writing and portrait drawing -Videos about walruses, seals, and puffins Guidance We learned all about Compound Words! This is something you can start pointing out at home because the kids got a kick out of them! December Readers We had more students turn in their reading logs! Congratulations to all of your hard work! Ice Cream Party After a lot of kind deeds, our class filled the Kindness Jar! :D They were jumping for joy (if you can't tell from the blurry pictures)! They decided that the next incentive they are working towards is extra recess. I'm so proud of them for all of their efforts. That jar was filled with so many little things that became BIG deals! HWT We studied letter Q by doing our usual practices. The students felt so proud of them when they corrected a YouTube video for adding a a vowel sound to Q (saying QWAH). :P It made me giggle. Meeting Because of the shortened week and testing, we will be studying the Hummingbird of Love: I am kind for the next two weeks. The students heard a story about it, made a drawing for any staff member in the school, and handed out Hershey kisses to the other 4K classroom. Birthday Happy Birthday, Connor! Thank you for celebrating with us at school and letting us be part of your special day! Perfect Attendance Congratulations to the December group of perfect attendance students! :D Polar Express Day The children were so excited about this event and I wish that I could've given them a chance to ride a REAL train. We punched our tickets and boarded the train, watched clips from the movie, listened to songs from the movie, did a hot chocolate craft, listened to and retold the story with pictures, had popcorn and hot chocolate, and watched a short movie. Our classroom's tree looks beautiful, thanks to all of their ornaments, and their holiday spirit was strong. Not to mention the fact that we all had a long week so it was nice to spend time in our PJs :) Gifts The children all opened a book from me and I hope that you get the chance to read it with them at some point! :D I also spent time opening gifts with them and taking pictures with the kiddos who wanted them. HWT We practiced the letter C this week and learned about its two sounds. Meeting We met our last Peacemaker, the Lion of Balance: "I am healthy, bright, and filled with light like the sun." We practiced this concept by doing Yoga and Breathing with Hudson's mom, Traci! Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to help their young minds. :) We also repeated empowering phrases to ourselves. Now that we met all seven Peacemakers, we will go back through them and learn a new idea! I can already tell that these Peacemakers are helping the students grow, emotionally and socially. Kindness We started our Santa acts of kindness this week and searched the room for our elf, Noel, each day. Here's what we did to spread kindness: -Smiled at as many people as we could -Shared toys -Gave a Hershey kiss to bus drivers and family members who pick us up -Held the door open for someone -Colored a picture for someone St. Nick The students were so excited to come to school and check their stockings! They worked so hard to make them and were REALLY hoping that St. Nick would visit them at school too. Good thing we hung a special key on the door so he could get into our classroom! :D Their shouts of happiness were remarkable. Gingerbread Loose in School After reading our book, the gingerbread popped out and sent us on a Wild Gingerbread Chase around our school! We stopped by the library, nurse's office, and principal's office but we couldn't catch him. He was sweet enough to leave some cookies behind for us! HWT We learned all about the letter U! They were up for another vowel challenge (learning the long and short sounds)! We practiced finding U objects, building it, writing it, and finding it among other letters Meeting We met another Peacemaker: The Owl of Intuition- "I trust myself. My body knows what to do." We practiced this by using Super Kids movement cards, self-help skills like zipping up coats and washing ALL PARTS of hands while singing the alphabet, and a collaborative game called The Zipper. Congratulations to our November Readers and November Perfect Attendance Students! :D I'm so proud of all of you! A personal celebration is that my boyfriend and I were home this weekend when a bathroom sink's coil broke and dumped about 600 gallons of water into our finished basement. I want to extend a BIG thank you to all of the parents who donated food items, assembled the treat bags, or assisted students with creating their gifts! :) Another HUGE thank you goes out to all of the family members who set time aside to join us at our celebration! The students were elated and it was absolutely lovely meeting everyone and seeing all of the smiles. :D It was a wonderful way to send the students off on Thanksgiving Break and I hope you all enjoyed the holiday!
